When it comes to renewing your youth, smoothing wrinkles, and putting your best face forward, there are few options as effective as Botox® injections. Despite being approved by the FDA since 2002, there are still many myths and misconceptions surrounding its use. It’s not uncommon for patients to toss aside the idea for fear of looking “frozen” or “robotic.” While Botox® injections can be overdone, a professional touch can help you look and feel naturally beautiful.
Let’s take a look at 5 of the most common questions our patients have before their appointments:
How Does Botox® Work?
Every time we smile, blink, laugh, talk, or move our face in any way, the muscles move, which in turn causes the wrinkles in our skin. Botox® is created using botulinum toxin A, a protein that goes to work blocking nerve signals that cause the muscles of your face to contract. By limiting that movement, we can mask pre-existing wrinkles, as well as prevent them from becoming deeper and more noticeable.
How Long Will My Results Last?
The length of time you can go between injections depends on many factors. Our bodies naturally metabolize Botox® over time, so those who tend to have a faster metabolism will have results that don’t last quite as long. In general, though, your treatments will last 3-5 months from the date of your injection. You can help extend the life of your treatments by opting for “maintenance” injections ever 3-4 months.
What Will My Recovery Be Like?
Botox® doesn’t require especially long recoveries, which is why it’s sometimes called a “lunchtime facelift.” Immediately after your injections, you can go about your day as normal, with the exception of avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours, laying down for 4 hours and air travel for 24 hours. While the injections are typically quick and relatively painless, some people may experience light bruising at the injection sites.
Will I Look “Overdone?”
Looking “overdone” is really a matter of opinion. The amount of freezing that you will experience namely depends on where the injections are placed and how much Botox® is used during your treatment. If you want to look natural, discuss that with your doctor. Be very clear about your expectations, as different people have different tastes in how they want their results to look.
What Areas are Most Effectively Treated with Botox®?
While Botox® cannot “fill in” wrinkles, it can temporarily stop them from showing or from getting worse. That’s why your injection options will include your forehead, crow’s feet, the top of your nose (where crinkling is common). Botox® will go to work blocking the nerve signals to these areas, stopping them from wrinkling when you make facial expressions.
While Botox® is safe for almost everyone, it’s important to speak with a licensed professional about whether or not it’s right for you. As with any cosmetic treatment, the key is communication and realistic expectations. While Botox® is highly effective, it cannot address all types of wrinkles and lines.
