Differin® Gel, a Dermatologist-Backed Acne Essential
Whether you’re a teen navigating breakouts for the first time or an adult dealing with persistent or hormonal acne, Differin® Gel (adapalene 0.1%) is a proven, dermatologist-recommended solution that’s available at Advanced Skin Therapeutics.
Differin is the first over-the-counter retinoid approved by the FDA for acne. It works deep within the skin to prevent new breakouts before they start, making it an ideal option for anyone frustrated by clogged pores, recurring blemishes, or inflamed skin that never seems to fully clear. Adapalene treats acne at the cellular level and is often recommended as a first-line topical treatment for mild to moderate breakouts.
We’ve added Differin to our selection of medical-grade skincare because it’s backed by decades of clinical research, and we’re here to help you build a routine that works for your skin.
What Is Differin and How Does It Work?
Differin contains adapalene, a dermatologist-developed retinoid that helps normalize the way your skin renews itself. Under typical conditions, your skin continuously sheds old cells and replaces them with new ones. But when that cycle slows down or becomes irregular—often due to hormonal changes, stress, or product buildup—dead cells can accumulate, clog pores, and trigger inflammation. This combination is what leads to breakouts. Adapalene addresses both issues at once by increasing cell turnover to prevent clogged pores and reducing inflammation within the skin before visible acne forms. That makes Differin especially effective for managing recurring or stubborn breakouts.
In addition to treating acne, Differin offers several added skin benefits with consistent use:
- As cell turnover normalizes, rough or bumpy areas often become smoother and more even, particularly around the forehead, chin, and jawline.
- Fades post-acne marks —sometimes called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation—by speeding up the skin’s natural repair cycle.
- Minimizes new breakouts and improving how skin heals to reduce the likelihood of future scarring or recurring flare-ups.
- Because it’s less irritating than older-generation retinoids, Differin is easier to integrate into routines that prioritize barrier health and hydration.
What to Expect: Clinical Results and Realistic Timelines
Differin is not an overnight fix, but its results are well-documented and worth the wait. In clinical studies, participants using adapalene 0.1% once daily saw a significant reduction in blemishes after 12 weeks of consistent use. That includes not just active breakouts but also blackheads, whiteheads, and early-stage congestion beneath the skin.
Most of our patients begin to notice subtle improvements within the first four to six weeks, but it’s common for acne to appear worse before it gets better. This temporary phase—often referred to as purging—occurs when clogged pores begin to clear, allowing deeper blockages to rise to the surface more quickly than usual.
Here’s a general timeline of what to expect:
- Weeks 1–4: Skin may feel drier or more sensitive. Mild redness or flaking is common. Some breakouts may worsen as pores begin to clear.
- Weeks 4–8: Early signs of improvement appear. Breakouts may still occur but often heal more quickly.
- Weeks 8–12: Acne lesions become less frequent and less severe. Skin texture and tone begin to visibly improve.
- After 12 weeks: With continued use, you’ll see clearer skin with fewer breakouts.
How to Start a Differin Routine Safely
Because Differin is a true retinoid, it should be introduced gradually and with the right supporting products to protect your skin barrier. Start with application every third night for the first week, then increase to every other night as tolerated, eventually working up to nightly use. Consistency is key, but comfort matters too—building a well-balanced routine will help you get results without unnecessary irritation.
Here’s how to structure your nighttime routine, step by step:
Cleanse Gently
Begin with a non-foaming or low-foaming cleanser that oil, dead skin cells, pollutants, and other debris from your pores without stripping the skin.
AST Recommendations:
- CLn Facial Cleanser – Moisturizing and gentle cleansing for normal and dry skin. Effective cleansing for skin prone to dryness, rashes, eczema, rosacea, and acne sensitivity.
- CLn Acne Cleanser – Acne treatment for the body and face: clears breakouts and promotes smooth, healthy skin. The only gentle acne cleanser formulated with sodium hypochlorite and 0.5% salicylic acid. Benzoyl Peroxide alternative acne product.
- CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser – balances oil control with gentle hydration.
- NeoStrata Clarifying Cleanser – A gel facial wash for oily skin. Formulated with PHA and Salicylic Acid to help clarify pores and improve skin texture.
- NeoStrata 4% PHA Facial Cleanser – Gentle gel facial wash formulated with a gentle PHA exfoliant, effectively removes makeup and impurities without irritation. Ideal for all skin types, especially sensitive and reactive skin.
Apply to Clean, Dry Skin
Wait at least 10–20 minutes after cleansing before applying Differin. This reduces the chance of irritation by ensuring your skin isn’t damp or overly permeable. Use a pea-sized amount for the entire face, avoiding the eyelids, corners of the nose and mouth, and broken skin. Apply in a thin, even layer. This step treats the source of acne at the cellular level by normalizing cell turnover and reducing inflammation within the pores.
Moisturize to Support the Skin Barrier
Follow with a fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer to help counteract dryness and support the skin’s natural defenses.
AST Recommendations:
- CLn Facial Moisturizer – Lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer, with niacinamide and ceramide complex. This non-comedogenic formula absorbs quickly and reduces the appearance of redness without clogging pores.
- SkinCeuticals Phyto A+ Brightening Treatment – Oil-free brightening moisturizer cream for sensitive, redness-prone and acne-prone skin. Lightweight moisturizer helps soothe and correct out-of-balance and redness-prone skin to improve brightness, texture, and clarity.
- CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion – includes ceramides and niacinamide for barrier repair.
- EltaMD PM Restore Moisturizer – oil-free hydration that moisturizes, repairs, and restores skin while you sleep

Avoid Other Active Ingredients Temporarily
Hold off on exfoliants, vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide, or other retinoids for the first few weeks. These can be added once your skin has cleared or if your skin adjusts well, always following the advise of your provider.
