When we perform a cosmetic dermatology treatment —microneedling with DermaPen, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser therapy —we’re triggering your skin’s natural healing response. The controlled injury causes a short burst of inflammation, which removes damaged cells and draws in oxygen, immune cells, and growth factors. That activity jump-starts the production of new collagen and elastin, rebuilding the skin’s structure from the inside out.

If inflammation lasts longer than it should, it can interfere with how fibroblasts organize collagen. Instead of forming smooth, parallel fibers that create firm, even skin, the collagen becomes dense and disordered. This leads to tissue that feels rough to the touch and reflects less light, making the skin appear dull or uneven as it heals.

That’s why professional aftercare matters just as much as the procedure itself. Medical-grade skincare supports the healing environment by keeping the barrier hydrated, reducing irritation, and protecting the skin while new collagen develops.

Through Advanced Skin Therapeutics, our patients can take home the same clinical-strength products we use in the office to help the skin recover comfortably and achieve the best possible outcome. Here’s what we recommend for post-procedure skincare featuring our most trusted brands:

First 24-48 Hours: Calm and Protect

Right after treatment, the barrier is leaky and easily irritated as the tiny micro-injuries are healing. Your job in this window is simple: keep the surface clean, start rebuilding the natural lipids in your moisture barrier, and avoid anything that increases heat or friction.

What to Expect

Some warmth and tightness, but it should start feeling better within a day or two. If you notice sharp pain, increasing heat, or any drainage, contact your provider at Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Institute.

What to Avoid

During this window, the skin is still sealing itself. Anything that traps heat or introduces bacteria can interfere with that process.

  • Touching the area: Keep your hands away from treated skin except when cleansing or applying moisturizer. Even clean fingers carry bacteria that can enter through the open wounds.
  • Heavy sweating: Perspiration contains salt and enzymes that sting freshly treated tissue and may trigger more inflammation.
  • Hot water or steam: Heat expands capillaries and increases swelling. Rinse with lukewarm water only and avoid long showers.
  • Makeup: Foundation and tinted moisturizers can block oxygen exchange and introduce microbes while pores are still open.
  • Direct sunlight: Fresh collagen and pigment cells are highly reactive to UV exposure. Even a brief time outdoors can cause discoloration, so stay indoors or in full shade.

Cleanse

Keep cleansing limited to once in the morning and once at night with a non-foaming, sulfate-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid using washcloths or any textured cleansing pads. It’s best to use your hands only to minimize friction. Pat dry gently with a clean towel.

We recommend:

  • CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser: Non-foaming, fragrance-free formula with ceramides and hyaluronic acid that restores lost moisture and reinforces the skin’s protective barrier.
  • NeoStrata® Facial Cleanser PHA 4: A mild cleanser with polyhydroxy acids that draw water into the skin while gently supporting barrier repair. It rinses away easily and helps maintain hydration as the skin begins to heal.
  • CLn Facial Cleanser: A mild but potent antibacterial cleanser that contains hypochlorus acid.

Moisturize

Apply a post-procedure moisturizer immediately after cleansing, while the skin is still slightly damp. Choose formulas designed to seal in water and supply lipids that the skin can’t yet make on its own.

We recommend:

Targeted Post-Procedure Care

In these first two days, it’s normal to see mild redness, swelling, and bruising because the blood vessels have widened to deliver oxygen and immune cells. You can help along the healing process with targeted formulations designed for post-procedure skin.

Targeted Products for Redness, Bruising, and Healing

  • Revision Skincare Vitamin K Serum: Reinforces fragile capillaries and helps disperse trapped red blood cells beneath the surface, reducing the look of redness and early bruising.
  • Clinicians Complex Bruise Cream: Combines vitamin K, arnica, and green-tea extract to calm tenderness and speed visible fading after injectables or laser work. Apply gently twice daily until discoloration subsides.
  • Silagen Scar Refinement System: Forms a silicone barrier over healing incisions or laser sites. It prevents friction and water loss, helping scars stay smooth and less noticeable as they mature.

Days 3–7: Restore Hydration

By day three, the barrier has started to close, but it’s still not working at full strength. Collagen and elastin form below the surface, while the outer layer rebuilds the lipids that hold moisture in. This is when you’ll want to provide consistent hydration and barrier support to help new tissue mature evenly while soothing away any lingering redness.

What to Expect

Mild dryness or flaking is part of the normal cell turnover process.

What to Avoid

Even though the skin looks calmer, it’s still vulnerable to irritation that sets off the inflammatory response or interferes with collagen organization.

  • Active ingredients: Products with acids, retinoids, or vitamin C reach deeper layers while the barrier is still permeable, which can trigger stinging and prolonged redness.
  • Exfoliation: Rubbing or peeling it away can reopen healing tissue and restart inflammation.
  • Heat and friction: High temperatures, steam, or tight clothing bring blood  to the surface and keep the skin flushed longer
  • Sun exposure: UV light interferes with collagen formation and can cause uneven pigment where the skin is still sensitive.

Cleanse

If you need to remove sunscreen or makeup, use a soft, non-stripping micellar water or cleansing milk rather than an oil-based balm. Oils can block the still-healing pores.

You’ll still want to keep your cleanser as gentle as possible, using a mild, non-foaming cleaner with lukewarm water once or twice a day. If your skin feels tight or dry after washing, reduce frequency to once a day and add an extra layer of moisturizer afterward.

Moisturize

Stick to fragrance-free, humectant-rich formulas that draw water into the skin and help it retain it. You should still avoid exfoliants or actives until your provider clears them, as the surface is still brand new and quite sensitive.

We recommend:

  • NeoStrata® Bionic Face Serum: A lightweight, non-irritating serum that attracts water to the upper layers of skin and helps maintain the moisture needed for collagen remodeling.
  • Revision Skincare D·E·J Face Cream: A peptide-rich moisturizer that supports the skin’s natural repair signals while reinforcing the newly formed barrier. Helps reduce redness and strengthens the skin’s resilience as it transitions out of the healing phase.

Sun Protection

Because of how sensitive new skin is to UV damage, it’s best to stay indoors or in full shade. However, if you have to go outside, apply mineral sunscreen, as it’s less likely to cause irritation than chemical formulas.

We recommend:

Long-Term Care

Once the skin looks healed on the surface, deeper rebuilding is still happening. Collagen continues to organize for several weeks, and pigment-producing cells can stay reactive even longer. This stage is about preservation—keeping that new collagen healthy, preventing UV damage, and helping the skin stay balanced as it settles into its stronger, smoother state.

Sun Protection

New collagen is especially vulnerable to sunlight. UV exposure breaks down the same fibers your treatment worked to rebuild, so using daily sunscreen helps your results last.

We recommend:

Hydration and Barrier Support

Even when your skin feels normal again, hydrating it helps collagen mature properly and preserves elasticity.

We recommend:

  • Revision Skincare D·E·J Daily Boosting Serum: Strengthens the skin’s resilience with peptides and antioxidants that support long-term collagen health. Continued use keeps the skin firm, hydrated, and more resistant to future damage.
