Your skin is designed to refresh and renew itself. Every 28 days, old cells rise to the surface and shed, revealing the newer, healthier skin underneath.

However, that cell turnover process can slow down due to a number of factors: stress, sun exposure, aging, and even the wrong skincare products can cause dead skin to linger longer than it should. When that happens, those layers that were supposed to slough away build up, causing a whole suite of skin issues. Your complexion looks duller, the texture feels rough and uneven, and products can’t penetrate through the buildup to perform how you’d like them to.

If you’re considering your first chemical peel or are ready for something stronger than an at-home treatment, a glycolic acid peel could be the next step.

What Is a Glycolic Acid Peel?

A glycolic acid peel is a superficial chemical exfoliation treatment that targets the outermost layers of your skin. It uses glycolic acid— an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) naturally derived from sugarcane—to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, encouraging a faster, cleaner shedding process.

Glycolic acid has the smallest molecular size of all the AHAs, which means it penetrates the skin more easily than acids like lactic or mandelic. That small size allows it to work just beneath the surface, stimulating renewal without needing deeper, more aggressive peeling. It’s strong enough to make a visible difference but gentle enough that most people achieve excellent results without the risk of serious complications.

Benefits of a Glycolic Acid Peel

  • Brighter complexion: Fresh, new skin reflects light better than dry buildup. Peels help restore that natural luminosity.
  • Improved tone: Glycolic acid can help fade sun spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne, and melasma by speeding up your skin’s natural repair cycle. As those old skin cells come up to the surface, they bring the melanin pigment with them and are replaced by cells that carry your skin’s natural color.
  • Increase collagen production: Chemical peels stimulate the natural production of collagen, a key protein that helps maintain skin elasticity and firmness. As you age, collagen production naturally decreases, leading to skin laxity like sagging and aging, including fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Softened fine lines: While not a substitute for deeper treatments, regular glycolic peels can soften the early signs of aging by smoothing and evening the skin tone with cell turnover and encouraging collagen renewal.
  • Improves absorption of other products: Dead skin can block even the best serums and moisturizers. Once the surface is clear, your skincare products can penetrate deeper and perform more effectively.
  • Reduces acne breakouts and acne scarring: By working on the surface of your skin, glycolic acid peels clear away debris, dead skin cells, and oils trapped in your pores. Regular treatment can help reduce overall pore congestion, resulting in fewer blemishes. Additionally, chemical peels can help fade the appearance of acne scars, leaving you with a more even skin tone.
  • Minimize the appearance of pores: Glycolic acid peels reduce the appearance of large pores by removing excess oil and debris that clog them. Pores appear smaller, tighter.

What to Expect During Your Glycolic Acid Peel

Three days prior to your glycolic acid peel, discontinue use of any retinol/tretinoin products. On the day of your treatment, you can expect your appointment to last around 30 minutes from start to finish. Plan to arrive with a clean, fresh face free of cosmetics.

Once you arrive, your provider will cleanse your skin to remove any oils and residue that might block the peel’s absorption. Then, they’ll apply the peel solution across the surface of your face or other targeted areas, such as the decolletage.

Your skincare expert will determine the proper potency, ranging from 20% to 70%. You can expect gentle, superficial exfoliation on the milder end of that range. Stronger peels penetrate slightly deeper into the epidermis and produce more noticeable flaking or peeling afterward. However, they are more effective at addressing issues like discoloration and scarring.

You might feel a light tingling or very mild stinging as the acid dissolves the bonds between the dead skin cells, however this sensation typically fades within just a few minutes.

What to Expect After Your Glycolic Acid Peel

Right after your peel, your skin may look slightly pink or feel a little tight, similar to a mild sunburn. In the following days, you might notice some mild dryness, flaking, or light peeling as your skin sheds the dead layers loosened by the treatment.

Not everyone will see visible peeling, particularly those who opt for a lower potency, and that’s okay! Cellular turnover still happens beneath the surface, even if the shedding isn’t apparent.

During this “recovery” period, you’re clear to go about your regular daily routine with a few exceptions to your skincare:

  • Keep your regimen simple with a gentle cleanser, a high-quality, clinical-grade moisturizer, and a broad-spectrum SPF. Your skin will be more vulnerable to UV damage after a peel, and skipping sunscreen can actually cause further pigmentation.
  • Pause any retinoids or exfoliants for at least 3–7 days unless your provider says otherwise.

Most people feel like their skin is back to normal in two days, though noticeably brighter and smoother.

How Often Can I Get a Glycolic Peel?

While you’ll notice results after just one treatment, it’s best to plan for a series of glycolic acid peels— once every 4-6 weeks— to achieve the best results. Repeated peels will keep your skin’s turnover cycle functioning efficiently, so you’ll notice fading acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines.
